Reflections on the Mullerslane Farm Event -Part 3 of 3

In this series we have discussed the Mullerslane farm event highlights, and what it takes to put on a farm event. Now, we will discuss our commitment. We are the attenders or participants. Commitment is a big word to swallow. Yes, I did use that word. It puts us in a frame of mind to find a way to come when the usual way is blocked or nonexistent.

So why do I even use that word? Surely, we just make our way to the farm event. Remember Murphy’s law – which I will not recite here. Hence, we actually may have to plan or work around Murphy’s law.

Adventure

So how do we do this? Again – sorry if you have heard this before – by working together. Let us imagine that you discover you are unable to come 4 days or more before the event. What can you do? You put a post up on homesteadingtoday.com and see if anyone is able to go. Could you get a ride with them? You can even offer to pay gas. Perhaps your gas offer will tip the scales, because another family has discovered that the gas money is out of their budget. Now two families are going, that weren’t before.

Our pickup likes it around town at the moment, but not too far beyond. Hence, we asked our adopted brother from South Africa to take me down for both of the days. At the Mullerslane farm event there were 3 guys and 5 gals that used one big tent and came down from the Wisconsin Dells area. I believe there were even more of them. Not sure how many vehicles they used but I know there had to be cooperation involved there.

Lastly, it may not be without adventure, as one of the Wisconsin Dells group’s tents did not survive the thunderstorm that hit around 6-6:30 pm and the other tent got thoroughly wet. Hence, after the storm had ended on Saturday evening, they journeyed home. However, I got to meet them and am impressed with their hydroponic and labor-saving vegetable cropping practices. May this be the beginning of new relationships as well as being taught new farming practices.

It may not be possible to come every year, but let that be the exception instead of the rule.

You can find out about their farm and to order what they offer from soap to wool to hand forged items here:
