Native Animals – Please Stay Out of My Garden Part 4
Enjoying the beauty and chatter of many birds can draw other native animals into your yard. A resident of northern Michigan in the Lower Peninsula region noticed an increase of skunks in his immediate vicinity. A neighbor has an abundance of feeders and this resident is seeing more skunks and raccoons lately. When a winter blankets the wilderness with white, it covers up food sources as well. Anything extra is seen as a treasure trove to the native animals.
The best thing is to kill the skunks. Why? When they come to your feeders they will inevitably spray upon being startled and that yellow Sulfur Thiol spray is toxic to birds when they eat those seeds off the ground.
Another person couldn’t figure out how the raccoons were able to get in and harass his dogs. So he built an electric fence around his property and even had to electrify the gate, because the raccoons found that spot of entry as well.
Another common native is the bear. Now, bears pretty much stick to themselves, but the local residents don’t leave out any food for them either.
Hence, a healthy dose of common sense goes a long way in the wilderness.
