Native Animals…Please Stay Out of My Garden Part 3
Depending on where you hunt in the United States, you may run into different native animals. Over this past winter a resident of the northern Michigan in the Lower Peninsula region had his bushes literally eaten to the ground by starving deer. Sadly to say he said he would not eat a deer if his life depended on it. Too much of a risk of eating disease infected meat.
You see there is a group of deer in the extreme northern tip that has tuberculosis. In order to stem the spread of the disease, the Michigan DNR made it illegal to feed the deer as many hunters were wont to do. This consisted of eliminating the huge piles of sugar beets that this country is known for. The thought was that after an infected deer had his fill of the sugar beets, another healthy deer would finish them and get tuberculosis. However, the deer, used to being fed, started literally eating anything in their path. Too bad for his shrubs; hopefully they weren’t valuable monetarily.
