Spring is in the air…let’s go on a Safari

Now some of you are going to think I am plum off my rocker when I say that I have never heard of this place in Oregon, USA. Wildlife Safari in Winston Oregon, USA, not in Kenya, Africa. Perhaps it is because I am writing this from the Midwest, where we go to the Shedd Aquarium or the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, for field trips. I really am not sure why…However, I am enthralled to learn of this wild kingdom in the mostly temperate-climate United States.

For those of you, like me, Wildlife Safari is an area of land 600 acres large, which has 3 fenced in quadrants. One holds the rhinos, giraffes, cheetah and ostriches. Another holds the deer, elk and bison. Lastly, one holds bears, bald eagles, and bobcats.

Sadly to say, I discovered a little known fact. Ostriches are the worst wild animals of the bunch. They will come right up to the cars, so you must have your windows up. Why sad? I saw the movie, Atari, recently and when it got to the part where John Wayne’s zoo photographer had 3 baby elephants following her around, I said, ” I want one”. Of course, I was not serious as it took 20 goats to feed one baby elephant. Still, I decided I would settle for raising ostriches. When I discovered that they could be mean critters…. I went back to my idea of a cattle, goat, guinea hen and horse ranch. Oh yes, I will add in a couple of mustangs, a person can only handle so much domestication.

The Safari in the name gives us the hint that this is a drive-through only facility. The drive-thru takes 1 and one-half hours to complete and you are welcome to go through twice on one ticket. They have volunteer opportunities to be tour guides that are train conductors, animal watchers, animal diet preparers, and even an elephants’ toenail filers. There is even a Safari Docent program you can join. Docents are the new word meaning naturalists; individuals with special training that enable them to teach us about nature.

I do welcome any Wildlife Safari member to correct anything here as I am writing as I have been told, not firsthand, as I have not visited wildlife Safari…..yet
